Example: First eBook

Among the 30+ clients I've collaborated with, one was Cytale –a remarkable early innovator in digital publishing.
The example below dates back several years, but it stands out for its pioneering technology: the very first French eBook, launched well before eBooks became mainstream.

Cybook by Cytale

Cytale was a pioneering company that developed the first French eBook device –designed to read digital books and newspapers, and even annotate them.
The project was striking for its time, merging both software and hardware into a unified user experience.

I had the opportunity to test the Cybook myself and actively explored its features as the product’s very first user. This hands-on testing allowed me to anticipate user needs and shape the documentation around real-world usage –an essential approach, especially when using a touch-screen stylus was still uncommon.

My role involved:

  • Designing and authoring the Cybook's online Help system in HTML and CSS using RoboHelp.
  • Writing the printed user manual, thoughtfully crafted to guide readers who might be unfamiliar with technology.
  • Working with a graphic designer who provided custom icons to match the visual identity.

The online Help was comprehensive, with contextual guidance, examples, tips, an index, general information, and a menu system tailored to the eBook format. Navigation and layout were fully adapted to the device’s constraints and new usages.
